The proclamation of the independent Czechoslovak state in October 1918 resulted in the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The territory of Slovakia, which had hitherto belonged to Hungary and was now annexed to Czechoslovakia, became a source of conflict between the forces of Czechoslovakia and Hungary
Political figures, led by T. G. Masaryk, were very successful in defending the recognition of the existence of the independent state. Edvard Beneš, the second president of Czechoslovakia, who was renowned as a great diplomat, pushed for the southern part of Slovakia to be recognised as the demarcation line, before the official borders were determined. Slovak territory appropriated to Czechoslovakia was a thorn in the side for the Hungarians, of course; they were not happy with the new borders and insisted that Hungarian territory remained within its original borders. And so a dispute arose over between Hungary on one side and Czechoslovakia on the other over the Slovak territory. The Hungarians had a military advantage over Czechoslovakia. The Czechoslovakian army’s attack began on 27th April, and the Hungarian counterattack had a clear intent – to push the Czechoslovak army out of Slovakia. The war started when the Czechoslovakian army was not adequately prepared, as the Italian commander Piccioni had been replaced by the French general Pellé, who was appointed supreme commander of the Czechoslovak army. Thanks to the top brass’s lack of preparation, the Hungarian Red Army first occupied two thirds of Slovakia and managed to reach as far as the border with Poland. The Hungarian army’s march east did not end until the armistice agreement in June 1919.
