For the greater glory of God

The Society of Jesus, Societas Iesu (abbreviated to SI or SJ – Jesuit Order), is one of the largest and most signi cant monastic orders in the Roman Catholic Church. It was founded on 15 August 1534 in Montmartre by St. Ignatius of Loyola. Its members are known as Jesuits.

In spite of the fact that the order was abolished in 1773 by Pope Clement XIV under pressure from secular European rulers, it never wholly disappeared in practice. It was later restored in 1814 by Pope Pius VII, and today it has more than 20,000 members and focuses on pastoral and missionary activity or science and education. But this was not always the case, as our forebears discovered quite literally rst hand, paradoxically in the name of the Jesuit motto Ad maiorem Dei gloriam (For the greater glory of God).

The Society of Jesus is a male order without a parallel female branch, but the English Ladies (Congregacio Jesu – approximately 2700 sisters) or the sisters of Sacré-Coeur (approximately 4200 sisters) bear a certain striking resemblance. The only woman accepted into the order was the Spanish crown princess, Joanna of Spain, the daughter of Emperor Charles V and a personal friend of Ignatius of Loyola. But her membership of the order was strictly con dential. In our country today the English Ladies and Society of Sisters of Jesus operate with several tens of members, as does the Czech province of the Society of Jesus, which operates 8 houses. Its provincial is Josef Stuchlý.
