The Cathedral of the Lancet Arch

Matthias, a notable representative of the after-classical Gothic, was born in around 1290 in the French Arras. In this country he is well known as the first builder of the Cathedral of St. Vitus, Wenceslas and Adalbert in the Prague Castle.

Before his arrival to Prague, Matthias worked at the Papal court in Avignon. Here he met a young Margrave Charles, who later appointed Matthias to his greatest construction. This event was preceded by “Ex supernae providentia maiestatis”, the Papal bull issued by Clement VI on 30 th April 1344. This document raised the Prague bishopric (founded in 973), to an archbishopric. Thus Arnost of Pardubice became the last Prague bishop (1343– 1344) and, at the same time, also the first Archbish- op (1344–1364). As soon as it had been decided on construction of the new three-aisled Gothic cathedral, the Charles IV invited Matthias to Prague.

On 21 st November 1344 the foundation stone was laid personally by the already blind King John of Luxembourg and his sons Charles and John Henry of Luxembourg. In the following eight years Matthias built eight arcades of the interior choir, connecting parts of ambulatory including five bayed chapels and the entire Eastern part of the choir. For this purpose Matthias founded his own building workshop in Hradčany. After that the workshop including the cathedral construction work were taken over by Peter Parler, who, however, significantly modified the original Mathias ́s plans. The work on the cathedral was interrupted many times and finished only in 1929.
