Nicholas von Mertens (*1982), director of the American Center.

I grew up near Boston Massachusetts however my fi rst experience of living abroad was when I was seven years old and my family moved to Arusha Tanzania for one year. My father had been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship (http://www.fulbright. cz/) and taught at the local university. This experience helped lead me to study International Relations at university and after I graduated I worked for two years as an English teacher in rural Japan.

As an English teacher and now as a diplomat my goal is to enchance understading of U.S. politics, history, society, culture and of course foreign policy. In Prague I have the opportunity to do this through programs, events and discussions at the American Center (www.americkecentrum.cz) we also have American Corners in Brno and Plzen.

Compared to where I grew up in the United States I think the Czech Republic has a great public transportation system. I use it nearly every day to get to work, meetings, or other travel around the country.

Which place in our country would you recommend them as tip on a trip?

After living in Prague for two years I would encourage any visitor to explore Prague’s cobblestone streets, castle, churches and museums. I have also enjoyed visiting the Czech Republic’s national parks. There are many well marked hiking and biking trails. I would also recoomend visiting Plzen and the many towns in Eastern Bohemia that have monuments or statues commemorating the liberation of these places by the U.S. Army at the end of World War II.
