Eliska’s grandfather was president of the Prague Stock Exchange and a principal shareholder of the Melantrich Printing Company. He was executed by the Nazis during the occupation on June 5, 1942 as he repeatedly turned down their collaboration proposals. In 1948, her father accepted the invitation of the US Government to travel as a private banker to New York. The Communist takeover in February forced him to stay. A year later Eliska with her mother and brother escaped to Germany. In 1950 Eliska joined her father in the USA and eventually graduated from Georgetown University.
At the age of 35, she married a prominent US banker and descendant of Thomas Jefferson. Three years later their daughter Alexandra was born. Eliska´s professional career started in the White House at the age of 22, where she spent 18 years as a Special Assistant to five US Presidents. She then worked ten more years at the US Department of State and, since 1991, she has regularly visited Prague.
Taking care of her seriously ill father, she fi nally returned back to the Czech Republic in 1998. Considering her story, it is probably not a bad idea to ask Eliska Haskova-Coolidge for a few travel tips, don’t you think?
“Apart from historic Prague, my favorite place in the Czech Republic is defi nitely the Sumava Mountain Range. I spend time at Castle Kundratice which I inherited from my grandmother and grandfather. They and their guests often found spiritual strength and peace of mind at our picturesque chapel of Saint Gunther of Bohemia which is tucked into the hillside of our forest. My father is buried next to it. I too spend precious moments there recharging my energy. The place is accessible to anyone seeking understanding and compassion by remembering the hermit who lived there in a cave and reached out to repair the severed human relationships in this rough and volatile border area.”
