The Czech Republic’s leading heart surgeon Prof. MUDr. Jan Pirk, DrSc. (* 20. April 1948, Prague), who carried out the most heart transplants in the Czech Republic, likes to refl ect in his spare time on what makes our society ill. For years, he has been promoting physical activity as an active way of life so it is therefore hardly surprising that he has the proverbial love aff air with sport.

You have been presenting ‘Hearts Made of Stone’ each year at Vyšehrad on the occasion of the new edition of the exhibition entitled: ”My Homeland through Journeys of Change“. What place in the Czech Republic is the place of “Your heart”?

“Your heart”? I would have been badly Prague born and bred, if the place of my heart would not be Prague. But since everyone knows Prague, I must say that the special place in my heart belongs to the small and charming village of Konojedy, situated between Kostelec nad Černými lesy and Stříbrná Skalice. Although it is only 35 km from Prague, the previous regime did not leave any significant marks on this village. Since it was not a central village with a strong infrastructure, but according to the men in power, just a village that one is only “meant to die in”, there are no modern shops so it has retained the character of a Central Bohemian village with a beautiful Baroque church, which has recently been successfully renovated. Since 1950, I often visited our small cottage with my parents and I spent all my childhood there because we could not travel abroad much. The surrounding Jevanské and Posázavské forests are full of mushrooms, and you can run and it is pleasant to cycle there. It is a short drive to Prague, yet surrounded by beautiful countryside.

WHERE would you invite our readers for a trip and why?

I would recommend a trip to Kutná Hora, not only for the beautifully renovated fresco on house No. 603, but since Kutná Hora has undergone extensive renovation work in recent years, it is one of the most beautiful towns in the country. And when you set off on a trip, maybe for a day or even two, there should be lots to see. The Medieval Mine, St. Barbra’s Church, and the other medieval monuments are certainly worth a visit. Besides, only a few people are aware that it is also home to the smallest wine region in the Czech Republic.

Thank you for your kind and interesting invitation on behalf of our readers.
