Antonín Dvořák

Antonín Dvořák was born on 8 September 1841 in Nelahozeves, as the fi rst of eight children. All the men in Dvořák family had always been butchers, and so it was automatically assumed that Antonín, the fi rst born son, would continue the tradition. In addition to butchery, the family members also tended to inherit musical talent.

Antonín dedicated his whole life to music. He played in the orchestra of the Provisional Theatre, conducted, lectured at the Prague and New York Music Conservatories, but most of all, he composed music. Throughout his lifetime, he was regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time If you want to follow in his footsteps, you can visit his native house in Nelahozeves. The exhibition dedicated to the composer’s life and work focuses on his youth, which he spent at Nelahozeves. The Antonín Dvořák Museum can be found in Villa America in Prague 2. The museum’s collection includes a unique collection of the original sheet music of Dvořák’s autograph scores. Dvořák’s inspiration for the opera Rusalka was the Neo-Renaissance stately residence at Vysoká u Příbrami; the estate was owned at the time by his brother- -in-law, Count Václav Kounic. Today, the residence serves as a memorial and the local auditorium off ers visitors a chance to listen to more than 80 recordings of Dvořák’s works.
