We present you with an invitation to a trip from the representative and councillor for culture, heritage preservation, exhibitions and tourism of the capital city of Prague, Mr Jan Wolf.
During the reign of Charles IV, Prague experienced a period of massive development, which brought us architectural treasures that can still be admired today. Under his reign, Prague became both the imperial residence and the seat of the ruler of the Holy Roman Empire. These circumstances and the associated social development were refl ected in the developments. We can, therefore, fi nd within a relatively small area of the historic centre of Prague and in close proximity to each other, Christian, Jewish, Orthodox and other sacral buildings. Given last year’s anniversary of the birth of Charles IV., allow me to introduce you to those that are inextricably linked to his reign, and yet somewhat unjustly neglected.
These include five churches in the New Town, which are ingeniously spaced so that when viewed from above, they form the cross, a blessing to the city, and which is oriented towards the royal seat in Vyšehrad. The group of fi ve includes the Church of St. Catherine, dedicated to Charles’s favourite saint and from which the high Gothic tower was preserved. Also noticeable is the Church of St. Apollinaire, whose dedication refers to Italian Ravenna, the last seat of the Roman emperors in the 5th century. The Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary at Na Trávníčku is remarkable for its square layout and tower, which is the most tilted tower in Prague. The Church of Virgin Mary at Na Slovanech (Emauzy) was founded in 1347 as the only monastery with Slavonic liturgy in western Christendom. The last of the fi ve is the Church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary and St. Charles the Great, which is unique for its late Gothic star-ribbed vaulting, the holy steps from red marble and a unique grotto – also known as the Bethlehem Chapel.
