Christians celebrate Easter as the most important time of the year; however, many Easter traditions are even older. Easter celebrations were observed by peasants as the beginning of a new year for vegetation.
The Easter holiday is preceded by a 40 day fast, predominantly by adults. The fi rst day of fasting is on Ash Wednesday, which follows Shrove Tuesday and ends with White Saturday. Fasting meant not eating fatty foods and a strict ban on noisy celebrations. However, the fasting period split the Sundays, and with them, most of the related pre-Christian traditions. The folk tradition gave these Sundays names based on dishes while traditions followed on those days: Pučálka, Pražná, Kýchavná, Družebná, Smrtná and Květná.
