A Native of Dobruška

A Native of DobruškaDoes the name František Vladislav Hek ring a bell? No? But F. L.Věk , that’s a different story I dare say. You can undoubtedly recall the pleasant face of actor R. Brzobohatý from Filip’s fi lm of the same name. However, not everyone knows that Alois Jirásek was inspired by the life of a real person when writing this several-volume novel.

F. Vl. Hek (Věk) came from Dobruška. He was born in 1769 to the family of a locksmith. Similarly, as his character in the novel he studied at the Piarist Gymnasium in Prague and met Czech patriots there. Later he returned to Dobruška to take over his father’s shop. Here he became involved in spreading Czech National Revival ideas and set up an external branch of the Kramerius publishing house - Česká expedice. However, his main contribution lies in musical and mainly literary creations, particularly satirical poetry. One of his most famous works is Good Friday, a blistering criticism of Dobruška parochial life.
He died in 1847 in Kyšperk (today’s Letohrad) at his daughter Ludmila’s home. Hek’s grave can be found at the local cemetery with his memorial standing near the church tower. Dobruška has not forgotten its famous son – and when you are nearby, don’t forget to pop in and visit the house, where he was born, now containing an exposition about his life and the era he lived in, including the interior of a merchant’s shop. This April is the perfect time for such a visit, as on the 11th it will be the 240th anniversary of Hek’s birth.
