Sylva Langová was one of the few Czech actresses who managed to make a name for themselves abroad. She went on acting in London and didn’t return to Czech film until 1998, for her role in the comedy Postel (Bed).
Sylva Langová came from the family of a high-ranking army officer, and entered the world of film at the age of fourteen. During her studies she played a small role as Slávinka in the famous comedy Dívka v modrém (The Girl In Blue - 1939). After finishing at the Conservatory she became involved with the theatre in Kladno; when she was twenty she performed on-stage at the Vinohrad Theatre; after the war she acted at D 46, and finally at Činohra 5. Května. She excelled at playing sensitive, temperamental, yet courageous girls on stage (Markétka in Faust, Manon in Manon Lescaut, Kateřina in The Taming of the Shrew), and also in film (Král ulice, Sextánka, Děvčata, nedejte se, Dívka v modrém, Panna). Her greatest break in front of the camera was playing alongside Oldřich Nový as his wife in the comedy Parohy. In 1948 she married a British citizen, David Williams, and moved to Great Britain. Once abroad, she continued her theatre career and worked with the BBC and Radio Free Europe on Czech broadcasts, so was only able to return home after 1989. Together with other Czech emigrants she acted in a German film about the fate of a Czech intellectual who had emigrated – Následuj mě (Follow Me). After almost half a century she returned to Czech film to play the eccentric grandmother in the comedy Postel, which was a great success at the festival in Cannes. Her son Misha Williams is a British television director and producer.
