Learning About Real Lager in Pilsen

In the middle of the 19th century, the brewery in Pilsen underwent a brewing revolution.

Learning About Real Lager in PilsenFor the first time in the history of mankind a bottom fermented lager with a wonderful tang, golden colour and thick snow-white foam was brewed.Over two thirds of the beer in the world was inspired by this exceptional brew, and still today they are called pils, pilsner and even pilsener.

Today, Pilsner Urquell is a lively and dynamic brewery, which combines the traditional brewing technique with the most modern brewing technology. The brewery has become a unique industrial heritage site, which attracts not only brewing experts, but all people that love good lager.

The tour of the brewery takes in all the authentic locations where the lager has been made since 1842. You will visit a unique exhibition of brewing ingredients, the old and the present brewing hall, and the modern bottling plant with a capacity of 120,000 bottles an hour. The visit culminates in the old brewery cellars where you can taste unfiltered and unpasteurised Pilsner Urquell tapped directly from the old oak lager vats. Of course, this is only for those over the age of 18. The brewery is open all year round and the whole route is barrier-free.

Would you like to find out more about the history of beer? If you would, then you should certainly visit the Brewery Museum in Pilsen. It is housed in an original brewery house dating back to the 15th century. It has an inimitable medieval atmosphere and here you will discover the secrets behind brewing and the way beer has been served and drunk from Antiquity right up until today.

Apart from having over 15,000 exhibits, you can also take a look around the rooms used for brewing in the past. These include a late-Gothic malting room, kiln, drying room and lagering cellars. Here those that are at least 18 years old can also try out some lager.
